What Are Opioids?

An opioid is a substance that binds to the opioid receptors in the brain, reducing pain and causing sedation and euphoria. The classification includes medications such as Vicodin (hydrocodone), OxyContin (oxycodone), Percocet and morphine, as well as street drugs such as heroin. All opioids affect the body and brain in the same way: by reducing the number of pain signals that the nervous system sends to the brain, as well as the brain’s reactions to them.

What Is Opioid Dependence and Addiction?

Opioid pain medication is very effective at pain control, but it comes with a risk. Regular users of opioids develop physical dependence. When dependent patients are ready to stop using an opioid, they must taper off gradually or face crippling withdrawals. If the psychoactive effects of such a medication appeals so much that a patient starts taking it in a way not consistent with his or her doctor’s instructions, it can lead to a dangerous pain pill addiction. Some patients resort to attempting to get prescriptions from more than one doctor or turning to street dealers.

How Common Are Opioid Abuse and Pain Pill Addiction?

Opioid abuse is one of the most common types of drug abuse in the United States. It pervades all social classes, even among people who have never tried illegal drugs. It is more common among people under 40 years old and particularly among men, but anyone is susceptible.

A chronic problem is often hidden out of shame until it gets progressively worse. It’s easy to begin to feel out of control of your own life.
